“Money” is the debut self-titled EP from Oklahmona alternative-rock band, Money. Coming from the Oklahoma DIY music scene—currently populated with diverse bands rich in punk/hardcore to shoegaze and alternative rock—Money delivers some of the heaviest straight-forward alternative rock music their town has to offer. Sharing members with the local OK band, Cursetheknife and inspired by late ‘90s bands like Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins and Far, Money’s songs are full of heavy bass, noisy guitars, and echoing vocals, where the band can easily fit on local shoegaze lineup, but slightly more heavy to fit on a punk/hardcore show. From the opener, “Fuct” to the closer, “Slower Hell”, Money does an excellent job in making these songs flow seamlessly while keeping the listener engaged and transfixed with sludgy guitars, clever interludes, and strong hooks on each song.

“Ugly Flame” is the debut EP from North Carolina post-hardcore/emo band, Dull Mourning. Following their single “Burdens” released earlier in summer 2021, “Ugly Flame” continues to expand more on the post-hardcore/emo dynamic that the band carved out so well. “Ugly Flame” revolves around the feeling of frustration and struggling in everyday life. Tracks like ‘Demigod’ and ‘Nosebleed’ question the meaning of everyday life, while ‘Narrow Losses’ confronts the struggle of coping with medication. There’s a lot of harsh truths of life addressed on “Ugly Flame”, yet they all align with the yearning to be a better person and get out of the constant struggle.

Faint" is the debut EP from St. Louis, Missouri shoegaze band, Still. The band was formed in 2020 by Michael Hoeltge, Ben Koeing, David Shanle (New Lives, Time and Pressure), and Chris Wright, with a goal to write something different from their previous bands, primarily consisting of indie, hardcore, and pop-punk music. Still is a drastic change from the aforementioned, incorporating classic elements of shoegaze, with a mix of slowcore.
"Faint" feels like a journey from start to finish—introduced with guitars fading in on "Spinner" and concluding with fuzzy guitars, melodies, and heavy-hitting drums on "Downward". Throughout all of the noise, however, there is still a sense of catchiness, which can be difficult to capture in the genre. Still pull off the sound extremely well, with the help of local St.Louis producer, Gabe Usery, and master engineer, Zac Montez (Cloakroom, Turnover). “What's left to feel with all the sounds, as it all falls down?”

In 2021, when live music was still uncertain, Ease partnered with local Sacramento, CA studio, Rosa Mortem to film and record a live session. The studio environment was full of longtime collaborators, Jordan White with director/editor role and Joshua Unit, longtime producer for the band, joining on guitar and mixing/mastering the session. "Live at Rosa Mortem" captures the very raw emotions of Ease, performing a career-spanning setlist of songs from their split with Weathering on Sunday Drive Records, and from previous EPs, "Roots" and "Letters", including a new song from their upcoming album out later this year. The live set is a snapshot of Ease in 2021, full of lots of energy, uncertainty, and emotion.

"Feel It" is the debut EP from St.Louis, MO melodic-hardcore band, Squint. Featuring various members from Missouri bands Time and Pressure, New Lives, Soul Craft and Choir Vandals, Squint has a nice palette of sounds ranging from hardcore to alternative/indie rock. Largely influenced by a shared liking of Rites of Spring and Turning Point, "Feel It" take the sound of melodic-leaning hardcore, but Squint is able to put their own spin on it with fuzzed-out guitars and big riffs—recalling tones heard from bands like Seaweed and Sugar.
Most importantly, as the title suggests, "Feel It" loudly communicates a huge array of emotions. Themes of anger, presence, loving, depression, and more are delivered by vocalist and songwriter, Brennen Wilkinson. Each word is passionately shouted by Wilkinson, and with the backing of huge guitars and hard-hitting drums, all you want to do is shout-along, bang your heard, and of course—feel it.

A straight-edge hardcore band from the northeast USA is fairly common, however, in 2022, Anklebiter differs from their contemporaries in 2022 with a refreshing, yet familiar sound. Referencing early-mid '00s hardcore from their region—particularly the sound of Lockin' Out bands like Mental and Righteous Jams, mixed with the modern sounds from Result of Choice and Krimewatch, Anklebiter plays classic loud & fast hardcore.
On their first demo, producer Will Hirst captures Anklebiter's raw and furious energy on every track. While the sound is fast and upfront, the band knows when to pull back to make a balanced, dynamic, and exciting sound. Rachael Braverman's rhythmic, shouting vocals perfectly pair with the band's aggressive, driving sound performed by members Nick Birtles (Pummel), Evan Stein (Broken Vow), and L St. Germain.

Continuing their upbeat style of hardcore first heard on their 2021 single, “Big Dose”, Utmost is back with a new single titled, “Good Street”. Inspired by skating with the crew in New York, vocalist Alex Allen once again delivers unique, fun, and catchy hooks all over the track. Combined with heavy-hitting drums and production from bassist/producer, Jonathan Wisniewski, Utmost sprinkles in backing vocals, dissonant melodies, and more to create a dynamic, summer hardcore track.

Consistently looking within, questioning, and finding solutions to become a better person is an overall theme Spark has established in their music. On their first LP, “Supernova”, vocalist, Andy Villhauer dials on these themes from song to song, expressing rage for the way things are and encouraging positivity and growth. There’s truly a “Supernova” of emotions heard throughout the LP, with the backing of decades of influences of hardcore—from the sounds of DC’s revolution summer to the straight edge revival of the late 90s–early 00s. Andy, Fabian, Yannick, Chris and Jonas are at their strongest here, creating dynamic, expressive and melodic hardcore.
With the help of producer David Deutsch, Colin Knight and Will Killingsworth wrapping up mixing and mastering respectively, Spark shines on their first LP, creating a concise, emotional, and modern hardcore LP.

“Crimes of Despair” is the first LP from Sacramento metal/post-hardcore band, Anxious Arms. Over 5 years of being a band, releasing singles and EPs and touring, Anxious Arms has continuously honed in on what their sound is today. Beginning in the early days as an emo band and progressively introducing new sounds from metal and hardcore, the band organically evolved sonically.
Crimes of Despair does a great job displaying this. You can still hear bits of early Anxious Arms throughout the record, but sonically, there are many more layers and dynamics happening. This is quickly introduced on ‘Intro’, where a soundscape of Black Sabbath & Sleep-inspired guitars take over the song with lingering vocals, then loops into the title track—which explodes with heavy bass and shouting from vocalist, Kyle Bolla. Later tracks like ‘Foundation’ do a great job of switching the tempo at perfect points within the record–creating a more driving and urgent feeling.
Lyrically, Bolla is at his best. Emotions of loneliness, anger and doubt are poetically described in a doom-like world. There is an underlying through line of despair that tends to linger throughout the whole record. This theme, paired with the slow and heavy doom metal to post-hardcore dynamic works great. Anxious Arms are able to craft a concise and consistent LP, where a range of influences from Crowbar to Deftones and Cave In makes perfect sense.

Following their debut EP released earlier this spring, Squint is swiftly back with their follow-up, “Wash Away”. The two pair nicely together, where “Feel it” is much more driving and abrasive, “Wash Away” leans more into the poppier sound influenced by ‘90s DIY indie-rock from bands like Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, and Dinosaur Jr.
While “Wash Away” still does a great job of displaying Squint’s angsty, melodic hardcore heard on their debut, this batch of songs sound more upbeat with guitar melodies acting almost as backup vocals for Brennan to shout with. Again, Squint has carved their own path in this modern age of melodic hardcore with a unique rhythm to easily get stuck on repeat.

While there has been no shortage of modern-age, shoegaze-inspired alternative rock, All Under Heaven, Leaving Time and Glare have seemed to differentiate themselves in a heavy-wave. Spanning from New Jersey to Florida and Texas, each band adds their own spin on the sound. On this three-way split, All Under Heaven leads with a jangly guitar, with Defabritus’ distinctive, lingering vocals on ‘Show You My Pain’, which slowly flows into ‘Head Down’. Leaving Time brings a punch of heaviness in the middle of the split, with their ringing guitar leads and post-hardcore-inspired sound. Finally, on ‘Sunny’, Glare sounds as bright as ever, with a careful blend of Smashing Pumpkins and Lush-inspired swirling guitars and vocals. This first 3-way split on Sunday Drive Records captures the current sound of shoegaze/alternative rock in 2022—All Under Heaven, Leaving Time and Glare continue to evolve in this space and build interest of what’s next.

Madison & Floral connect Sign Language to home in Ohio. It represents hope, loss, relationships, love, and uncertainty. Sign Language carefully built their first LP around these themes and emotions. In nine songs, the band drifts between each, approaching them in unique ways.
On songs like ‘Abide’ the back-and-forth aching and soothing vocals lead the track, revolving around a loving, yet bittersweet memory. On ‘Crumbling’, slower guitars and harmonies lead the song—then on ‘Only You’ or ‘The Nothing’, Sign Language lean on their post-hardcore roots, creating the most driving and heaviest songs the band has yet to make.
Sign Language has mastered their songwriting on “Madison & Floral”—fitting perfectly at home in the unique environment they’ve created.

Fast, loud hardcore will never get old. “To Live and Withstand” clearly showcases this, where the majority of each song on the seven-song EP is just short of a minute and a half, yet packed with so much energy, emotion, and rhythm.
Anklebiter came right out of the gates in 2022 with their explosive demo. On their EP, they’ve only evolved what was heard prior. While still straightforward hardcore songs, Anklebiter’s songwriting is stronger and more confident than ever. “I Am…” and “Pearl” show the band easily playing with tempo and creating a powerful dynamic that’s tough not to dance to. Guitar solos and hooky bass lines are sprinkled throughout, adding more layers to the band’s furious sound.
“To Live and Withstand” is full of rageful recollections of life, detailed with harsh imagery and expressed with bursts of spite. Anklebiter continues to resist, calloused, growing and withstanding.

Florida emo/indie rock and Atlanta hardcore merge on this three-way split from Painful Choice, Sugar Coat, and The Arrival Note. Painful Choice expands further into the rev-summer sound heard in their demo; it is now much more honed in with the same passion and melody. Sugar Coat, a new Florida band, adds a jangly, indie-rock sound to the mix, with the Built to Spill/Pavement melodic influence. Finally, The Arrival Note closes out the split with their best songs yet. Over the years, the band has taken the late 90’s emo sound and modernized it to be their own. Now with a solid lineup, the band explores a more heavy, anthemic sound; channeling the Texas is the Reason LP or the more fast-paced Hey Mercedes songs.
